Delisting
Duke Nukem 3D was delisted on Steam and GOG.com on December 31st, 2015. The Megaton Edition on Steam and PlayStation Network was delisted on February 15th, 2016.
The Nuking of Duke Nukem
After years of stagnant development on Duke Nukem Forever, the game’s long-standing publisher, Take-Two Interactive, filed a breach of contract against 3D Realms/Apogee Software for failing to deliver on the product. Throughout the proceedings 3D Realms retained some rights to Duke Nukem but by August of 2015 the IP had changed ownership to Gearbox Software.
This resulted in 3D Realms removing their individual Duke Nukem titles from Steam and GOG.com. The 3D Realms Anthology — a collection of 32 titles united under a custom launcher — was also delisted but nearly all the titles were later made available individually.
Ultimately, the following titles were delisted from Steam and GOG.com on December 31st, 2015:
- Duke Nukem
- Duke Nukem II
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition (GOG)
- Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project
- 3D Realms Anthology (from 3D Realms, Steam)
- Balls of Steel
On February 15th, 2016, before the release of Gearbox’s Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour in October, Devolver Digital delisted Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition from Steam and PlayStation Network. The versions that were released on Desura were rendered delisted no later than October 25th, 2016 when OneClick purchased the site and took it offline.
What Remains
Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour has replaced all previous versions of Duke Nukem 3D that were sold digitally with the exception of the Xbox 360 version. Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project also remains available on Xbox 360 and is the only Duke Nukem title still available on iOS. The Megaton Edition of Duke Nukem 3D is available on PlayStation from the Hong Kong, Indian, and Korean PlayStation Store.
Numerous versions of Duke Nukem 3D are available on physical media including PC, Linux, Mac, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, PlayStation and more.
About the Game
“The third chapter in the series, and the first with a 3D perspective (the original Duke Nukem and the sequel, Duke Nukem II, are side scrolling platform games). This game, set sometime in the early 21st century, begins in a ravaged LA, which was overtaken by aliens while you were abducted during Duke Nukem II. Duke, upon returning to Earth, finds himself with another mess to clean up, and another alien race that needs exterminating.
Duke is a can-do hero who realizes that sometimes innocent people have to die in order to save Earth, so accuracy of gunfire is not a real concern to him.“
