my fasting blood sugar very rarely gets below 100, sometimes il see mid to high 90s even on strict keto-20g carbs per day high fat etc. this is most likely glucose sparing bassicaly your muscles just say screw the glucose and leave it for the brain. seems pretty normal for some people also my blood suger doesnt ever spike to past 110-115 its bassically a straight line with small bumps.

Did you take the readings in the morning? Just like weighing yourself, you should do the readings at the same time of the day, but not too early for the readings. Blood sugars tend to spike in the mornings.

I usually measure around 1pm, 2 hours before my first meal. And if I need to, I'll measure again 2 hours after my last meal, so ~10pm

They were probably mid-morning. I’d say between 10:00 and noon. Don’t think it was dawn phenomenon (I get up around 4:00am). I almost wonder if the high readings are work stress related.

Interesting. Do you log your meals? Would be nice to see what you eat. If there is anything unnatural that's causing a spike in insulin.

People don't want to admit to it here but artificial sweeteners cause insulin spike

I don’t log but I’m fairly strict carnivore. Black coffee with salt, butter and coconut oil in the morning. Usually OMAD though I’ll throw in a can of sardines every other day for lunch for the omega 3s. Steak, chicken, pork etc for dinner with whatever seasoning strikes me. Rarely eat vegetables except for olives. Very occasional milk or cream. More frequently hard cheeses. No sweet foods, real or artificially sweetened. A few bourbons at night 😏

All sounded perfect until that last sentence. Maybe if too late at night, your body doesn't metabolism the alcohol into sugar until mid day?

Edit: what are you using to measure? I assume it's through blood as you mentioned blood glucose

Haha, I’ve been wondering myself but I like to rationalize that, hey bourbon has no carbs! (But I’ve been curious how alcohol would actually metabolize). I really hope that’s not the cause. I really like my one little vice.

Nothing wrong with indulging once in a while. Your love for that bourbon is equivalent to my love for sugar (milky creamy chocolate). Personally I categorize them in two categorizes

1) desserts Keto sugar free ice cream (Enlightened) Chia pudding 90+ dark chocolate

2) treats Organic Chocolate pistachios Anything with sugar but needs to be quality (Pastry at a good bakery etc)

Desserts I have daily as part of my routine, treats I indulge in only on rare/special occasions. Your bourbon should be a treat

Definitely get your insulin checked along with your blood sugar. Make sure you're not drinking black coffee before the test also as some suggest that's fine before a fasted blood test but it will increase glucose readings.

My fasting glucose is about 120 and had my doc a bit concerned until I suggested checking insulin too. It was low so she agreed I'm experiencing adaptive glucose sparing, or physiological insulin resistance. It's perfectly healthy and a sign of being fat-adapted... your muscles simply resist absorbing the normal morning glucose spike because they don't need it.

Check your HOMA-IR.

Haven't seen that before. Mine comes out to 1.1 based on my last blood tests.

That is spectacular.

I’ve got that down as one of my requested test when I have my physical in August.

Thank you and I’ll definitely get my insulin checked here soon. That’s reassuring considering you always hear how high blood glucose is so dangerous. I’m assuming based on your doctor’s response that it’s more high insulin levels you need to worry about.

[–]wtgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right... if your insulin is up and you still have high blood sugar, your body is fighting to lower it and failing... pathological insulin resistance.

Low insulin with mildly high blood sugar indicates it's physiological insulin resistance - at least assuming you're not a type 1 diabetic.

You should probably see a doctor as those levels are high for fasting for a non-diabetic.
