WTF is going on with Australia? It seems like they're part of the pilot program.

We are. It's scary, man. Everyone is too comfortable to care yet, though.

Cashless society is sooner than you think.

[–]Sorrow83 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Australian Gov been pushing for $10,000 cash ban, which apparently got shelved recently, and also pushing for cashless welfare cards (where people get ~20% of welfare as cash and the rest digital that can only be spent at nominated shops, supermarkets, rent, etc - no booze or ciggies either).

Why would anybody get wellfare in cash?

[–]Sorrow83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, not cash cash, I misspoke - I mean a direct deposit into their bank which they can withdraw as cash to spend at smaller shops, opportunity shops, etc.

That will be taken away - the 20% they're allowed they can withdraw, everything else is restricted to be spent at nominated shops. And even though supermarkets are nominated, the cigarettes and alcohol they sell is off-limits. Unless they have the 20% as cash, but they may also need that for new tires, or an electrician, or a birthday present.

Basically you spend on what the government allows - it's touted as reducing addictions, but the addicted are like that because they're usually either lower educated, have less opportunities, suffering mental issues or just want to relax - and that's generally caused by useless governments dropping the ball and scammers taking over the system.

Because its humane

Without cash you’d be like all naked in front of the government 24/7. Which’s just scary. They’d know where you go, what you buy, and almost every single detail of your daily life.
