If anyone wants background on this. Marty Stratton wrote a lengthy open letter on reddit to address the issues with Doom Eternal's OST:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/gdg25y/doom_eternal_ost_open_letter/

It's since been removed but can still be seen on wayback machine:

https://web.archive.org/web/20200504183244/https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/gdg25y/doom_eternal_ost_open_letter/

Edit: the original reddit post seems to show up now. Not sure why it was showing as [deleted] for me earlier.

[–]quick20minadventure 15 points16 points  (1 child)

why was it deleted though?

[–]Fob0bqAd34 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No idea. Ask him maybe he's on reddit :).

[–]ontheroadtonull 11 points12 points  (1 child)

The first link works for me.

[–]Fob0bqAd34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It working again for me now as well. It just showed [deleted] for me earlier hence I looked it up on wayback machine. I will edit.

Didn't ID already announce that they won't work with him anymore? He burnt that bridge and now he's hoping his followers will get them to open up to him? I don't know that guy but he comes off like a little bit of a douche.

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

100% fans keep pestering him to contact them, so he did.

[–]deadscreensky 138 points139 points  (0 children)

He must really think we're all idiots, huh?

Gordon very publicly tried to throw Id under the bus. They brought receipts strongly suggesting he was a liar and said they wouldn't work with him anymore. Sucks for the people who paid for the Doom Eternal soundtrack that he never provided, but it's obvious why Id wouldn't want anything to do with him.

[–]EristicMeow 82 points83 points  (9 children)

That first reply on his tweet though

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

And the donkey replying to it. "Oh we artists are so unpredictable, you can't expect us to make deadlines."

[–]A-Hind-D 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Which basically translates to “keep paying me while I don’t try to make any type of scope and stick to it.”

[–]mr207 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Truth hurts.

[–]nilsilvaEI 6 points7 points  (2 children)

What did it say? The one on top now is just "Lmao holy shit!"...

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (1 child)

'Finish your work on time next time'

[–]nilsilvaEI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Too bad the other replies don't know the truth.

[–]Andre_Dellamorte3080 12GB | i5-12600K | LG OLED42C2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you directly link to it?

[–]EristicMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant seem to find it but it was something along the lines of "Next time finish the album on time"

[–][deleted] 137 points138 points  (7 children)

I mean, is he going to do it for free? Dude fucked them around, tried to blame it on them, had to eat shit when ID responded with the actual chain of events. Get him to fuck, sounds like a dick.

[–]Blacky-NoirHeight appropriate fortress builder 71 points72 points  (3 children)

It appears this way...

And it appears he's doing it again. That the only point of this tweet: trying to brigade an audience to put pressure on id to give him more money.

Not a good look.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah, pretty wild brass neck on the guy.

[–]KingBasten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

big neck

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People were also pressuring him to contact them.

[–]IUseKeyboardOnXbox4k is not a gimmick 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Link to id response?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Its been an hour. Assume you googled it?

[–]IUseKeyboardOnXbox4k is not a gimmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Haha.

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

That's what happens when you burn bridges as bad as a public callout of your employer/people contracting you.

[–]__BIOHAZARD___Quad Ultrawide | R9 3900X + GTX 1080Ti | Steam Deck 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Dude does good work but it seemed like he was at fault for not completing it the first time around. Shame

[–]omegaferrari 57 points58 points  (14 children)

Just hire TRENT REZNOR for QUAKE REMAKE!!!

[–]ThatOnePerson 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I think they upset him by making him remove the booklet they had for the original Quake vinyl release last year though

[–]omegaferrari 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They must have an agreement now, because original quake is being released with the whole QUAKE OST by Trent

[–]SirFadakar13600KF/3080/32GB 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Wow I didn't know how bad I needed this in my life until reading it in text.

[–]omegaferrari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah

[–]skyturnedred 3 points4 points  (5 children)

NIN's bass player touring guitarist just started a game studio, maybe he'll get Trent to write some tunes.

[–]84theone 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Trent is NIN’s bass player.

They use other musicians during live shows but NIN was mostly a one man show until Atticus Ross was added in 2016.

[–]skyturnedred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I meant.

[–]ninfan200i5-3570k and HD 7850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NIN's GUITAR PLAYER!! Robin Finck is a guitarist, plus NIN only had a "dedicated bass player" in 2013. In that band being the Bass Player is really just playing a little of everything depending on the song.

[–]omegaferrari 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s his guitarist, Robin Finck

[–]skyturnedred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the other guys were liars, but surely it must be true now that you've corroborated their stories.

[–]Th3MaN1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's quite a bit to unpack here. And while the full story is not known, what baffles me is that there was absolutely no attempt to deliver a proper OST.

The work that was done by Chad Mossholder (Audio Director at id) is commendable considering everything that was going on behind the scenes. But the fact is that it's subpar in terms of quality, which I blame 100% on the fact that he didn't have good material to work with.

And this isn't just about Mick Gordon's work, it also concerns the music created for the DLC which has 2 different artists working on it, and yet there is no official release for those either.

It would be immature to point fingers at anyone, but you can't tell me that one of the most banging soundtracks for a video game is not seeing an official release.

Thank God for the fans who take the time to rip and mix these songs.

[–]danhoyuen 23 points24 points  (1 child)

do it for free

[–]SteveLolyouwish 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is how you start to make things right. He has to offer to do it for free. He has to eat crow, publicly apologize, take ownership, and then, maybe, they may open up to him.

That's the best move for everyone. For ID, for himself, for the fans who paid. It's almost all on him and he needs to own it and make it 110% right.

He needs to pull a No Man's Sky, or he's fucked. Probably even blacklisted himself, at least somewhat, with the shit he pulled.

[–]Echelon64 11 points12 points  (1 child)

So anyone new have a rundown on what finally happened?

[–]_realitycheck_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I could gather, Mick procrastinated too much and wasn't able to deliver the tracks on time. And what was salvaged was subpar quality.

[–]RiceCakeAlchemist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is why you dont burn bridges.

He started the whole public fiasco that forced iD to come out and defend themselves.

[–]A-Hind-D 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I’ve got mad respect for Mick and what he did in Doom, Prey, Wolfenstein and Doom Eternal but the way it al came crashing down last year leaves me with little empathy for him.

He sounded like he was very much hiding the fact he wasn’t able to complete the body of work for what was an already pushed back launch and did not want to ask ID for more time, especially for the post launch soundtrack.

Either it was a breakdown of communication or Mick lied on the check-ins.

Anyway, when it all came to ahead I felt that Mick thought he would be flush with jobs but so far we have seen little updates or new projects he’s worked on apart from a song with BMTH.

He’s one talented motherfucker all the same and I can’t fault the amount of work he’s done but I don’t think I would ever like to be working with him or have him set a deadline and not be down right honest about the work being bigger than expected. He’s an artist and art can’t be easily scoped but he should have set a cut off point for himself that meets the expectations of ID and what was agreed to.

A sad divorce all the same and I hope I hear his talent in future music.

[–]Dexxy07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably one of the reasons he acts like that is because he's bipolar

[–]hangmandelta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I think both sides of the issue (id and Mick) have both good points and parts that make them look crummy, I do want to point out that in this particular case, it's not as easy as just ripping the soundtrack and making an OST.

There are an excessive number of variations to every song thanks to the stem nature of the music. So Mick has to take all of that, try to arrange and whittle it down, and make an "official" version that flows well for an independent listener. In addition to volume mixing.

Im not excusing Mick falling behind schedule. But any artist with a streak of perfectionism, which Mick has in spades, can sympathize.

[–]Dynorton 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Dude basically started a witch hunt on a poor ID employee that tried to fix the OST as fast as possible.

[–]KingBasten 0 points1 point  (1 child)

le reddit witchunt, fucking dangerous

[–]Dynorton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They went on every social media platform that this person had harassing him nonstop & trying to get him fired you fucking clown

[–]Negaflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Move on to other stuff dude, I think that ship's sailed in more ways than one. Bethesda can be very petty, and well you did cock up things quite a bit (though their timing was also bullshit). Probably should have been less of a dick back then, esp when dealing with other dicks.

[–]ZeroBANG 7800X3D 32GB DDR5 RTX4070 1080P@144Hz G-Sync 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wait, is he suggesting that he wants to make new tracks for the game, or is he suggesting to remix the existing OST tracks?
Because of that initial topic where it was pointed out that the DE OST doesn't have the same dynamic and the "Mixing" was flat?

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EV7j5FhUwAELYoE?format=jpg&name=large

[–]Purple_Goose_Regent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it's about remaking the OST.

[–]ArcAngel071 2 points3 points  (5 children)

OOTL what’s up with this guy and why is id mad at him

[–]Renacles 3 points4 points  (1 child)

He started a massive controversy after failing to meet multiple deadlines. He basically made half the story public and then got called out by Hugo Martin.

[–]cbtboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*Marty Stratton.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

He did the soundtrack for Doom 2016 and most of Eternal. id and their fanboys are "mad" at him because he was contracted to do 59 songs for the game and didn't deliver in time. It sucks that he didn't, but the amount of whining and hate being thrown at this guy is massively overblown.

It's just how the nu-Doom crew operates. Most are underage or don't know how these things work.

[–]PapstJL4U 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The terms of the OST agreement with Mick were similar to the agreement on DOOM (2016) in that it required him to deliver a minimum of 12 tracks, but added bonus payments for on-time delivery. The agreement also gives him complete creative control over what he delivers.

so no, you are wrong

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright. Doesn't change the fact that the reaction by the Turnal fanboys is disproportionate to what actually happened.

[–]bitboti7 9700k / RTX2070 / 32GB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry Mick, reddit hates you now and has no problem calling you all kinds of names like you personally slighted them. No matter what you do from now on there will always be someone with a chip on their shoulder and a list of all the mistakes you've made, ready remind everyone in the comment sections of reddit.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and the producers gave him many many chances to get it done the first time round, but mick just said no

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (9 children)

I've never seen a comment section so bloodthirsty for a game's audio composer, especially based on some he-said-she-said letters from the main developer. "Piece of shit bridge burning diva" who even talks like that?

It's like he fucked your sisters. Chill out

[–]Cerodos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a seasoned redditor. I only read the headlines then make a couple paragraphs about why I am right.

[–]TehFineztJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly redditors giving him shit. Twitter, seems like they're showing him love but pushing him to properly apologize for this and that. Would be great if both sides could settle their differences or Mick could just move on which pains me to say but what's done is done ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Necrophag1st 25 points26 points  (2 children)

This guy seems like an egomaniac that doesn't want to take any personal responsibility for the events surrounding the DE soundtrack, even though it's abundantly clear that he is solely at fault for that whole debacle. I personally think his music is highly overrated anyway, it's just generic industrial djent. There's plenty of talented musicians/producers out there that can do the same or better.

[–]deadscreensky 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I otherwise agree, but I think you're selling his music a little short. His soundtrack for Killer Instinct especially has a nice breadth to it, and its dynamic interactivity is something we sadly rarely see in games. Like here's three examples that I could never call "generic industrial djent":

1
2
3

[–]ContributorX_PJ64 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I personally think his music is highly overrated anyway, it's just generic industrial djent.

You didn't play Prey, I assume.

[–]daviejambo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You blew it Mick

[–]JcMacklenn 15 points16 points  (35 children)

Unpopular opinion: iD/ Bethesda fucked themselves up.

They basically gave less time to Mick for double the tracks than DOOM 2016.

Doom 2016 got released on may 13 and the OST on September 28th. So he had much more time(5 months after launch) for 31 tracks.

One month after the game launch. They wrote that letter to the fans. let's not forget the "bright one" at ID/Bethesda that though it was a good idea to promise those with the collectors edition that they will have the OST at launch.

They could have promised something else like exclusives skins but no...

Sure it was Mick's fault for not respecting the deadline but could he really have made it in time ? For me I think it was a shitty deadline to begin with. I feel like any composer wouldn't be able to make it.

Let's not act like Bethesda/ ID are the most honest game company we know...

There's a reason they got Andrew and David Levy. Two guys working on the DLC tracks which is barely around a dozen of tracks.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (29 children)

Id gave Mick Gordon lots of extensions on the deadline that he himself agreed to.

When one agrees to a deadline, it's basic ethics to try and meet that deadline. I mean, any work of art can take a very long of time. But without a deadline, it's never gonna materialize as a final product.

Also the way Mick handled stuff with Chad was unprofessional. When Chad was being attacked, he could have stepped in and explained what really went down.

He was content watching Chad take all the heat, until Marty Stratton had to step in and explain what really went down.

I mean, screwups can happen. That's life. But the way Mick behaved was entitled and arrogant, at least. Also if Mick had an issue with releasing the OST with such a tight deadline, I bet he could have refused to do so. Or pointed out this problem before signing the contract. Then it would be on Bethesda to issue a statement or PR statement.

No matter how highly talented a person is, douche behaviour can just drive people away.

[–]heydudejustasec 11 points12 points  (0 children)

but could he really have made it in time ?

Well, crucially he agreed to it so either he thought so or he's an irresponsible businessman.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit killed API. I refuse to let them benefit from my own words for free -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

[–]rindar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the shitshow that happened between him and id, but I don't belive he's thinking of remaking the songs the other composer has been contracted to do for the dlcs.

He's most likely referring to remaking the ost that came separate of the game. Only a handful of songs were mastered by him, the rest sounding worse because they were taken from the game files, not the raws.

I think it's a good idea, at leas a short collab, for the fans. And of course, on no pay, or a small one. He still has a big fault in what happened.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job burning that bridge.

[–]Flesh_popsicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mick Gordon is my workout music. Fucking bangs

[–]Xalvayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk. I know the dude is kind of a douche and all but I still found his work to be much much better than what Ive heard off DE and the DLC. I was rather disappointed with it

[–]ClearskkyMSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez I can't imagine why.

[–]ZombiePyroNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What to do?

Do your job in the manner you're paid to do it? Hard concept.

[–]IsaacvithurstonArdiuno + A Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does this guy insist on ensuring no one will want to hire him lol

Like damn dude people pay you to make music not drama.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also love necto ulin who recreates unreal tournament soundtracks or just Alexander Brandon who did a lot of the originals

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s doing it for free why doesn’t he just do it and self publish as a “tribute album, inspired by Doom”.

[–]ZeldaMaster327800X3D | RTX 4090 | 3440x1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I loved his music in DOOM, I'd rather have someone who isn't a douchebag who's cool with burning bridges instead of doing his job even if it means the final product isn't as close to my tastes

[–]Mholinah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This man is a living diva. Andrew Hulshult is great.

[–]eagles310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh I think this dude burned his bridges with the way he went about it

[–]DogeShelter111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah and here i thought the drama for this OST was done

[–]Malfetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy is way too full of himself, like he made a good game soundtrack that in reality is purely mediocre in the instrumental metal world. Animals as Leaders, Scale the Summit, Intervals, and so many other bands are doing so much more than him.
